We Begin

tugging on my insides she asks me
to dance with her.
over and over she tugs.
finally, i notice.
finally, i turn to her.
holding no grudge for my being late,
she wraps her arms around my neck
and laughs in my ear.
it's time to dance, she says.
holding her in my arms,
we begin.
