Once upon a time, I was told that I couldn't do it. That I shouldn't dare. That the dream was too risky. That the risks too scary. The only people behind me were my three sons. And together, my three sons and I built a dream. Can you imagine building a dream with your sons? There are days I feel like the luckiest person alive. And that feeling has its roots in the darkest time in my life. How's that for something to think about on those dark days? Gold is found in that darkness. Gold that you don't even know exists. Hang on to that thought and come be part of our journey.

    Hello everyone!

As the resident geek, I thought it was time to start a category for any
tech related questions regarding the forum. If you are having trouble
with anything, or have questions about something, post them here and
I'll see if I can help!

The question of the day is how to set up a signature - that little line
of text that goes underneath all of your posts. A signature can be
useful for helping share your links, your favorite quote, or even just
your name. So, how is this done? Simplicity itself!

First, click on the button with your name at the top of the screen. It
should be located just to the left of the Sign Out button.

Next, click on the Signature Settings link in the left menu - this
should bring up a box where you can create your own signature. The
signature can be styled in HTML if you like, and may contain images and
links. (It's generally common courtesy to keep your signature small so
that threads remain easy to read.)

Let's use my signature as an example. I want to have a short quote, and then my name and websites. It should look like this:

‎"It couldn't have gone far, right? Somewhere in this building... is our talent."
    Noah Urban | www.BFGproductions.com | www.MisterNoah.com | www.Mazuzu.com

Ok, now I could just post that, but it will be formatted as plain text. Being a geek, that will never do!
Since the signature can be styled with HTML, I can start to have a bit of fun. I wish to make the quote in a small, light, italicized font. To do so, I would add the following code:

    <span style="font-size:10px; color:#999999; font:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-style:italic;">

Next the links. The standard link code is: <a href="your site URL">Your link text</a>
But again, that's not enough for me. I want to make the link open in a new tab, so I will add target="_blank" to the A tag. I also want it to  have a nice light blue colour, so I will add style="color:#0099FF;"

And finally, I want to have my name in bold. Boost my ego, right? To do so, I would simply add the bold <b> tags.
    Let's see it come together:

<span style="font-size:10px; color:#999999; font:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-style:italic;">"It couldn't have gone far, right? Somewhere in this building... is our talent."</span>
    <b>Noah Urban</b> | <a href="http://www.bfgproductions.com" target="_blank" style="color:#0099FF">www.BFGproductions.com</a> | <a href="http://www.misternoah.com" target="_blank" style="color:#0099FF">www.MisterNoah.com</a> | <a href="http://www.mazuzu.com" target="_blank" style="color:#0099FF">www.Mazuzu.com</a>

And that's it! It looks a bit more complicated than it really is. If you have any questions, or need help, just ask.

    Cheers,
    Noah

    Hey!
Lookie, look! It worked. Imagine that, huh?

Noah.  Wow, man. Your instructions rock. They were very straightforward.
I won't give up how many times I read through it, before I did the thing, but wooot woot!

I am so not tech savvy, but every day I expand my knowledge. So glad there are folks like you that get into the code lingo.  Do they have recipes for that somewhere?! I love cryptic and code stuff, but this sort of bum-fuzzles me!
Thanks for helping us shine and adding more bells and whistles for us to play with.

and kudos to everyone who boldly went where they'd never been b4!

Hey hey! Another signature! Great to see. Sorry to just now comment, I haven't been around here in a while...

Glad you enjoyed playing with this, Lisa! HTML is quite straightforward once you get used to the structure. There are a million sites out there that help people get into codin'... browse around and see what you can find. :) Try making yourself a little web page, and have some fun! It's addicting. :)

Hi Noah, how are you?  Catharine here.

Still trying to put images on my discussions.  I started a Photobucket album and tried to put the Http// in the insert image icon above the discussion I created.  Nothing.  Exactly what do I do after I have created the Photobucket album?  How to get it here from there?

    Thank you,
    Catharine

    Hi, Catharine!

Ah, excellent! And that didn't work? Mmm, strange. I'm going to try it here to see if it works for me. In this comment box there is a little picture icon directly underneath the Italic format button. If I click on that icon and add a URL (in this case a thumbnail of one of my photos on flickr.) and click Submit I should see the image preview here:

    image

Which works so far. Now I'll try posting it. That should be it though. At which step did it not work for you?

    Cheers,

    Noah

    Hello Noah,
As you see if you look at my forum Archetypes and Healing, my friend and I have made a mess of it.  Can you delete the failed attempts to post a photo, there are several?  We succeeded in posting 1 image that was too big so returned to photobucket to resize.  It will not go on neither do we see a preview.
We chose to post the URL located in Forums and Discussions in Photobucket.  What are we doing wrong and what about the mess on the forum?????

    Thank you for your help

Hi, Catherine! Sorry I'm just now getting to this.
Ok, I deleted a few of your posts to clean things up a bit. Sorry you're still having trouble.

It looks like you are trying to actually code in the image. i.e. using something like this: <img src="yourImageURL"> That will work, but it's a bit harder to work with. Using one of your images:

I'm am going to add the photo using the small image icon under the Italics button.

    image

Shown here 9th from the left.

If everything works right, your image should be shown below:

    image

Make sure you have the correct URL format. (you had http:// in there twice. "http://http://")
And then it should go in there fine.

If that's still not working, let me know.
Why not test it here first? Let's see if we can get things figured out. :)

    Cheers,
    Noah.
